Observation.01 / Description
Observation.01 explores how material influences the judgments that give form to an object.
The project began with ARGO2, a long-pile textile by Kvadrat.
Rather than applying the material to a predefined form,
a series of full-scale mock-ups were produced to observe how the material affected
decisions regarding proportion, edge condition, structure, and construction.
Throughout the process, decisions were repeatedly revised in response to the behavior of the material.
What emerged was not a fixed form generated by the material itself,
but a sequence of judgments shaped through continuous observation and adjustment.
The material appeared to influence not only practical decisions,
but also the interpretations through which those decisions were made.
Associations and images evoked by the textile became part of the design process,
affecting how the object was understood and developed.
This observation suggests that the material did not determine form directly. Rather,
it appeared to influence both the sequence of design judgments and the interpretations that guided them.
Observation.01
素材が形そのものではなく、形へ至る判断にどのような影響を与えるのかを観察した。
きっかけとなったのは、Kvadratのロングパイル生地「ARGO2」である。
あらかじめ形を決めて素材を当てはめるのではなく、実寸大のモックアップを繰り返し制作しながら検証を重ね、制作の過程で生じるさまざまな判断が素材によってどのように変化していくのかを観察した。
制作を進めるなかで、判断は何度も更新されていった。
最終的な形は素材の観察をしながら修正を繰り返すことで少しずつ現れてきた。
また、素材は設計上の判断だけでなく、その判断を促すイメージや解釈にも影響を与えていた。素材から受ける印象もまた、ものの見方や考え方にも静かに作用して次の判断を導いていった。
この観察から見えてきたのは、素材は形を決定するのではなく、判断の連鎖に作用し、その積み重ねとして形が現れるということである。
